Day 07 - 1900 mst (2000 cst)
Today was my last day on the slopes before I have to return to good old Chicago…
It really snowed last night, and Breckenridge reported 10″ of fresh powder this morning! I decided to head on over to Breckenridge to check it out.
I have limited exposure to deep snow, and even less on a snowboard… so, I knew today was going to be fun and nerve-racking at the same time.
I met a nice guy while waiting at the bus stop… and we decided to stick together for the day. This was a nice change of pace for me, since I have been snowboarding on my own for the entire week!
My new friend, Alex, was originally from Latvia and had grown-up in the Soviet Union before the fall of communism. He and his wife live in Pasadena, CA. He works at CalTech.
Alex and I hit the slopes hard and non-stop… We started on some of the “blue” runs that I had been on earlier in the week… The snow was indeed deep powder, so much that we decided to move up to the “black diamonds” just to have a steeper slope to keep our momentum up! I learned quickly to place a lot of weight on the rear of my snowboard to keep the nose of the board from ‘diving’ down into the deep powder.
We then decided to go to the summit and try a couple of the Bowls… I would have never of gone up there unless I was with a partner to help me should I fall or worse.
We did Imperial Bowl twice before heading over to Horseshoe Bowl. Horseshoe Bowl was treacherous, with numerous exposed rocks scattered about its steep slope. My snowboard clipped a couple rocks before I elected to stop and rethink my line. At this point, Alex fell and one of his skis came loose and proceeded into an area of deep powder.
We searched and searched for his lost ski, but after looking for over 30 minutes in deep powder Alex gave up and proceeded to walk down the remaining portion of the bowl. I waited for him to reach the bottom of the bowl before I continued down on my snowboard. Alex told me to go ahead and enjoy my day and not to worry about his situation. I felt bad leaving him, but he insisted that I go on without him. I stayed with him until we got to a chairlift that could take him to the mountain base.
At this point it got very cold and began snowing pretty hard. I ducked into a ski lodge to get something to drink before heading down to the base. During my break I noted that our search for the lost ski really wore me out! I decided to go down an easier “blue” run to finish off my snowboard trip.
Tonight I have to start packing for my return journey tomorrow afternoon!
