Well… apparently I didn’t have an injury free snowboard trip!
On the third-day of snowboarding, a kid on a snowboard hit me in the back after
launching himself over a homemade jump in the adjacent woods. I lost
control after the collision and caught my toe-edge of my board, which
flipped me forward onto my chest. The impact with the ground really
knocked the wind out of me, but after a couple of minutes I was able
to sit-up and then eventually get back on my feet and continue down to
the chairlift. I took a 30-45 minute lunch, after which I had some
discomfort in my right pectoral muscle and right arm… but, I just
thought it was a pulled-muscle. I took a bunch of Ibuprofen and kept
on trucking for the remainder (3 days) of the trip. When I got home,
I stopped taking the Ibuprofen and the pain came back… and
eventually got worse and worse. Then, during the past two or three
days, I started to have sharp pain in my shoulder blade (back)
muscles. According to the doctor who treated me, I have been
compensating for the injury and aggravated my surrounding muscles
(right pectoral and shoulder).
So, the doctor put me on restricted duties for at least one week…
The x-ray shows that the rib has started to heal, as indicated by a
calcification over the fracture site. Apparently, there is nothing
else they can do besides medicate for the pain and give me a muscle
relaxer. I have to careful not to put a lot of weight/pressure on my
right side (like picking stuff up, holding objects over my head or
chest, climb ladders, or support my weight using my right arm [like
getting out of bed]).
Bummer,
Todd.
